Surah Al-Balad (The City) - Aya count 20

لَاۤ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ ﴿١﴾

I swear by this city, Makkah -


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ ﴿٢﴾

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

وَوَالِدࣲ وَمَا وَلَدَ ﴿٣﴾

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ فِی كَبَدٍ ﴿٤﴾

We have certainly created man into hardship.


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

أَیَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن یَقۡدِرَ عَلَیۡهِ أَحَدࣱ ﴿٥﴾

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

یَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالࣰا لُّبَدًا ﴿٦﴾

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

أَیَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ یَرَهُۥۤ أَحَدٌ ﴿٧﴾

Does he think that no one has seen him?


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَیۡنَیۡنِ ﴿٨﴾

Have We not made for him two eyes?


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

وَلِسَانࣰا وَشَفَتَیۡنِ ﴿٩﴾

And a tongue and two lips?


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

وَهَدَیۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَیۡنِ ﴿١٠﴾

And have shown him the two ways?


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ ﴿١١﴾

But he has not broken through the difficult pass.


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

وَمَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ ﴿١٢﴾

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ﴿١٣﴾

It is the freeing of a slave


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

أَوۡ إِطۡعَـٰمࣱ فِی یَوۡمࣲ ذِی مَسۡغَبَةࣲ ﴿١٤﴾

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

یَتِیمࣰا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ ﴿١٥﴾

An orphan of near relationship


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

أَوۡ مِسۡكِینࣰا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةࣲ ﴿١٦﴾

Or a needy person in misery


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ ﴿١٧﴾

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

أُوْلَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَیۡمَنَةِ ﴿١٨﴾

Those are the companions of the right.


Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔایَـٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ ﴿١٩﴾

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.

عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَارࣱ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ ﴿٢٠﴾

Over them will be fire closed in.
